<description>Research two historical typographers and find one major visual composition that identifies/describes them. Replicate the two compositions manually to better understand their essential qualities. With master drawings, create a third hybrid composition.

Embodying the formal styles of Aldus Manutius and Bradbury Thompson, my hybrid equally represents both typographers. I justified and flowed my text like Manutius while keeping the placement of the images and text bodies evenly spaced and playful like the work of Thompson. The words are reset in Baskerville following Thompson’s creation of Alphabet 26.

<description>While overseas in the Tuscan hills of Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy (between Rome and Florence), I was fascinated by the dichotomy of ancient ruins spliced with medieval marvels and modern-day construction. As the buildings seamlessly flowed into one another, they transformed and faded into rolling hills and fields of glorious colors, a drastically different view from my normal modern city. I began to sketch the landscapes in order to preserve their beauty in my memory.

The pieces are intentionally less focused on accuracy, but rather about the quick impressions a landscape can hold over a person. To connect this foreign landscape to my own, I pulled simple imagery of homes such as those a child would draw to illustrate how these two different worlds smoothly forged in my mind, transforming space into place.

<description>Based from personal research and lectures throughout the semester, select one topic and visually present an argument. Transform your argument into a functional website.

Motion Study by Eadweard Muybridge instigated my research. The image was significant because it was the first time a photograph solved a scientific question. Using this as my basis, the site follows the history of devices that would later lead to moving pictures. The website flows chronologically, with provided links for the user to learn more or return to the home page. The site is consistently black and white, following the technological capabilities of the time.

<description>Plastic bags, a readably available and recyclable material, are often unconsidered and thrown away to spend the rest of their unbiodegradable days wasting away in a landfill. After extensive material studies, I learned with the appropriate amount of heat, plastic bags can be fused together and form a stronger and more durable, fabric like material. With this, I constructed a reusable grocery tote using previously used plastic grocery bags. The plastic bags were given a new life and replaced the need to constantly use new plastic bags.

<description>Beginning in the 1950s, advertising and manufacturing companies transformed America into a consumer culture. Product advertisements state you can “satisfy your desires,” while you “live your dreams and make your budget!” America has become a society of over-consuming impulse buyers, prioritizing want over need.

Publicly bring into awareness the issue of over-consumption by wheat pasting graffiti in public spaces where consumption occurs. Spaces include clothing stores, restaurants, banks, grocery stores, or a general public area, prompting the individual with the issue. The chosen text is based of the idea of desire for a material object, and how Americans have misconstrued the differences between ‘want’ and ‘need.’

Graffiti is a type of public marking with varying forms typically used to express social and political messages. Its form is idiosyncratic because each piece is individual to its maker. The maker of the graffiti remains anonymous to the public, leaving only the marks meaning to be interpreted.

<description>Read Marcovaldo by Italo Calvino. Analyze each chapter and see how the ideas function as a whole piece. For each chapter, create an image composed of at least two forms of photography that expresses your identified theme or understanding of the book.

“Think like Marcovaldo” I told myself. With that, I mapped out Marco’s travels and correlated each to an equivalent location in my world. I traveled and experienced each location, attempting to capture its atmosphere. To represent the enforcing structure of the city, I juxtaposed a photogram that was structured and geometric, resembling a street overview, portraying the forgotten beauty of nature. When the images are looked at as a whole, the photogram is intended to resemble the overview of a map.

<description>Design a solution which clearly communicates a “How to…” process. Look to communicate this process in a compelling and visual way to stimulate interest in the subject matter. Make the design “invisible” and/or negate the presence of the designer in the work. Make a clear system for communication that is appropriate for the subject matter. Make the system clear.

Inspired by Jonathan Bloom’s American Wasteland and a recent urge to remove unnecessary items in my life, I began thinking polemically on how to make consumers stop over-consuming. With this, I began by analyzing my lifestyle and where I most frequently over-consume and impulse-buy: the grocery store. My designed object would entice the consumer by subtly stating the immorality of the grocery store while also providing beneficial guidelines to change consumer habits. Ideally, these small changes in consumer routine would result in a noticeable impact.

<description>Use a given set of random objects to generate visual questions, experiments and explorations. Then add new techniques and processes to deepen your investigation.

After analyzing my collection of what appeared to be irrationally created marks, I saw an underlying system to their creation. Each mark was composed of action (s) + object. In theory, this system can be imposed upon any object to create a series of marks that can later be manipulated further and applied for any project. It was learned: exploration is key to investigation.

<description>The system of gift–giving is corrupted by social tradition and obligation; it has transformed into a prescribed process. By changing the process of gift–giving, sentiment and meaning are inserted not into the gift itself, but into the action. The objective of gift–giving is now no longer about finding the ‘perfect’ object, but rather about approaching someone you care for, spending time with them, and creating a memory. This is the gift.
